Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder is a beautiful, and popular, spot for photos. There you’ll find sweeping views of the mountains and a breathtaking sunset. Generally, you would have to hike to get a view like this one, but not at Lost Gulch Overlook! Due to the size and popularity of the location, it can be a little tricky to plan your session there. Here’s what you need to know about taking photos at Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, Colorado.
1. Shoot on a weeknight or opt for a full-sun session mid-morning
Remember those breathtaking sunsets I mentioned? Well, they’re no secret! If you want to take your photos at sunset, plan on having an audience. I met Kim and Ash for their anniversary session on a Monday evening, and we were still surrounded by other visitors. To minimize the crowd, try to avoid booking a weekend session. But, if you must book a weekend session, consider either a sunrise session or a mid-morning session. Full-sun photos in the late morning can be just as beautiful as golden hour photos!
2. Arrive early to ensure you find a parking spot
For as popular as this spot is, the parking lot at Lost Gulch Overlook is relatively small. I recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your session in case you need to wait for a spot to open up.
3. Consider your shoes
When you’re picking your shoes for your session at Lost Gulch Overlook, remember that you’ll be on a rocky cliff. This isn’t the best location for heels. Instead, opt for flat shoes with decent traction.
4. If you want to take family photos, and you have small kids, this isn’t the location for you.
As I mentioned previously, you’ll be on a rocky cliff. This doesn’t give little kids the freedom to run around and play. The backdrop makes for beautiful photos, but it limits movement. I find that most kids do well when we incorporate play into the session, and this location isn’t the best for that. Lost Gulch Overlook is ideal for senior photos, maternity/pregnancy announcement photos, and couple’s portraits.
With all of that being said, Lost Gulch Overlook is a magnificent photoshoot location not too far from Denver. The view is unmatched and you can see mountain tops for miles! This spot may require a little more thought and planning than others, but it’s worth it.
