Senior year is a big deal. You’ve worked hard to get to this moment and that should be celebrated! You deserve photos that feel effortless, elevated, and fully you. If you’re currently a junior in high school, or a parent of a high school junior, your senior summer starts in May! Many families often put off thinking about their senior photos until the end of the summer or early fall, but that could leave you scrambling to submit your photo to the yearbook before the deadline. So, when is the best time to take your senior photos in Denver? Well, that depends. Consider these things:
1. Your yearbook deadline
Most schools require you to submit your yearbook photo sometime in October, but I’ve seen some that are earlier and some that are later. Keep in mind that your photographer still needs to edit your photos after your session, so you won’t have them back on session day. So, let’s say it takes 30 days to get your photos back from your photographer. This means that your session needs to be more than 30 days before your yearbook deadline so you’re not rushed picking your photo for the yearbook. After all, once you submit it, that photo will be in the yearbook forever.

2. Are you hoping for something specific in your photos (like sunflowers) that’s only available for a limited time?
If your dream session includes something like sunflowers, that takes a little bit of planning since they don’t bloom year-round. I know of an incredible sunflower field not too far from Denver that’s typically available for photos in July. But, if you wait until August to book, then you may have already missed your chance for sunflower field photos.

Thinking about your senior photos at the beginning of the summer might seem too early, but it actually gives you more options. Planning for your Denver senior photos early in the season allows you to reserve your desired session date with the photographer of your choice instead of desperately searching for any photographer with availability. Your senior session should be a fun and memorable experience—a part of your senior year that you look forward to. It should NOT be something stressful that you’re just checking off your list because you didn’t have enough time for the experience you truly wanted.
