Family Photo Session in Boulder, Colorado

I had the absolute pleasure of connecting with the Shokouhi family because they’re friends with one of my past clients, Luke, and saw his senior photos! (You can see Luke’s senior session at South Mesa Trailhead HERE.) As a Denver portrait and family photographer, I photograph my clients in a variety of beautiful locations around the state. But, I LOVE photographing family photo sessions in Boulder, Colorado.

In Boulder, you can get gorgeous, close-up views of the mountains without the need to travel INTO the mountains. This is an appealing option when you don’t want to commit to a long drive for your session, especially if you have young kids in your family who get carsick on the winding mountain roads.

I met the Shokouhis for their family photo session on a frigid day in December. Even though the temperature was freezing, I just knew it was going to be an extraordinary session the moment I stepped out of my car. As a Denver portrait and family photographer who shoots most of her sessions outdoors, I’m always paying attention to the position of the sun throughout the year chasing the perfect light! On this day in December, the golden light was peeking through a break in the mountains so beautifully—it couldn’t have been more ideal. That ethereal light was a little gift for the Shokouhi family since they had to endure such cold temperatures!

When Kim emailed me to see if I would be available for a family session, she mentioned that both of her adult daughters would be home for the holidays and that it would be the first time that all four of them would be in the same room in over six months! As a mom of two little (and very dependent) boys, I can’t even imagine that season of life right now. And even though I’ll be so proud of my boys when they’re older and making their own way in the world, it will also break my heart that they’re no longer the little boys who are making a mess of the house while simultaneously filling it with immeasurable joy.

Although Ava and Olivia aren’t physically living with their mom and dad, you can tell that their love still resides there. As these two young women blaze the trails of their adult lives, the love of Kim and Jian is the wind in their sails. And as parents, that’s the best gift we can give our children!
